Iditarod Update 3-11-2009

The morning found good news for Lance Mackey, he has moved from 7th to 4th and picked up 2 hours on the leader. Mackey arrived in McGrath at 1:15am and promptly left for Takotna. I am expecting him to arrive at the next checkpoint, Takotna, shortly.

The good news is Mackey still has his entire team of 16 dogs. They seem to be running very strong and are averaging a much faster speed than the leaders at this point. Last check the team was pulling at close to 8.5mph.

I feel optimistic that Mackey and his team are in a position to be very competitive. Last evening Mackey was nearly 4 hours behind the leader. This morning he was only 1:45 behind the leader.

I am eagerly anticipating Mackey and his teams check-in in Takotna. Hopefully he will still have 16 healthy dogs and he will have maintained the gains he made overnight.
